Youth Leadership Task Force

DC Campaign’s Youth Leadership Task Force (YLTF) cultivates character development during weekly meetings focusing on teen pregnancy prevention facts and sexual health information, while also providing leadership and advocacy training to girls from several schools across the District. This dynamic program involves young people in everything DC Campaign does: They keep us connected to the pulse of youth culture, visit and testify before the city council and school officials, write letters to the editor, moderate panels, and share their stories at roundtables. Throughout the program the girls are imbued with the idea that they are better than their surroundings and should strive for more. We will train the girls how to script, film and produce two videos a month that will focus on a teen issue of their choice. By giving the girls a voice, we encourage them to become experts on issues that affect teens throughout the District. By never letting them accept second best and continually challenging them, the Youth Leadership Task Force helps girls see that they are valuable and should treat themselves, and each other, as such. The Youth Leadership Task Force is: • Character Development: through the belief that all girls can grow to reach their ultimate potential, the YLTF builds confidence and increases self-control while also reinforcing writing and public speaking skills. • Decision Making Skill: helps the girls learn to make deliberate decisions to live a healthy life and make decisions that lead to better personal outcomes. • Equal Citizens: increase awareness of rights and responsibilities of being a citizen. The girls become aware that they have and deserve the same rights as others, and not to expect anything less than the best for themselves and from others. They also learn that they have a responsibility to be positive leaders in their community.• Broaden Horizons: increases awareness of greater possibilities and provides exposure to new experiences, other cultures, ideas and opportunities. DC Campaign places another set of trustworthy, concerned adults in the lives of Youth Leadership Task Force members to help them navigate the often treacherous waters of adolescence.
