On May 21, 2003, DC Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy awarded its annual Conversation Changer Awards and announced the new teen pregnancy number for the District of Columbia.
“Since DC Campaign began, the rate of teen pregnancy has fallen significantly from 152.1 per 1,000 girls age 15 – 19 to 81.4 for the same age group. Despite the good news, this is no time for complacency. DC continues to have one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the nation. We hope the new number will bring us even closer to our goal of cutting the rate in half by 2005,” said Brenda Rhodes Miller, executive director for DC Campaign.
This year, during Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month, DC Campaign presented its fourth annual Conversation Changers awards as a way to celebrate the work that goes into making teen pregnancy a thing of the past. Five teen pregnancy prevention advocates received awards. This year’s honorees were: AED Center for Youth Development and Policy Research, First Baptist Church, Minnesota Avenue, United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, Sex Offense and Domestic Violence Section, Untouchable Taste Catering, Maya Angelou Public Charter School, and WAMU 88 FM Radio.
