On February 23, 2000, DC Campaign celebrated its official launch with the First Annual Conversation Changer Awards reception at the White House honoring six exemplary local programs that have made great strides in teen pregnancy prevention in DC in recent years.
First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton and Delegate Eleanore Holmes Norton joined DC Campaign's Board of Directors in lauding the honorees, that included Catholic Charities' Teen Life Choices, Life Pieces to Masterpieces, Children's Hospital's Generations Program, Children's Hospital Teens Against the Spread of AIDS Program, Covenant House Washington's Peer Supported Teen Pregnancy Prevention Project, and Mary's Center for Maternal and Child Care's Teen Program.
Mrs. Clinton spoke eloquently about the importance of teen pregnancy prevention and the great strides that have been made in reducing teen pregnancy rates in DC and across the country. She also gave a call to action, challenging DC Campaign to "redouble our efforts" by enlisting "every church, every community group, every school, every parent's group, every neighborhood group that we possibly can reach to get this conversation going."
