DC Campaign celebrated its third year of working to cut the District’s teen pregnancy rate in half with its annual Conversation Changer Awards on Thursday, February 14, 2002, 10 – 11:30 a.m. at the Sumner School in Downtown DC.
DC Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy honored five teen pregnancy
prevention advocates who have helped change the conversation about teen
pregnancy from one that places blame and shame on teenagers to
conversations about what it takes to motivate teens to want to avoid
pregnancy in the first place. Honorees were: Asian American LEAD; DC
Action for Children; DCPS Head Start Programs; For the Love of Health,
Education and Humanity; and Washington Hospital Center Teen Alliance
for Prepared Parenting.
DC Campaign Board Chair Joyce Ladner reminded the audience that adults must commit to "making sure that the transition from teen years to adult years is as smooth as possible; providing opportunities and support not only for teens in our own families, but also for teens who have no families to stand by them, or whose families are having a tough time of it; making sure that each child is privy to the best possible education available, making the school systems accountable from kindergarten to senior high school; making sure the government funds after school activities; and making sure that all teens get the health care they need, from immunizations to family planning, from back to school check-ups to mental health care."
